Hello and welcome to another episode of Phishing for Answers. Today I'm here with Nigel Miller, the Deputy CISO over at Maximus, so I'm really excited to talk to you today. Maybe you could start by just telling us a little bit about yourself, maybe your background, how you got into cybersecurity in the first place.
Nigel Miller:Sure, absolutely. Background how you got into cyber security in the first place? Sure, absolutely so. I, uh, initially I had my first little. I was a developer at a large credit card credit card processing company. I had my initial step into security, didn't realize it was really a security function and locking down some critical aspects of how credit cards are made and processed or the cards are made in a way that would be a real problem if it wasn't locked down and all the company had access to what it was. Then eventually went through my career as an IT, started in IT and loved it being in IT and I had an opportunity to shift over to-.
Joshua Crumbaugh:A lot of people say that loved it and IT in the same sentence. But oh yeah.
Nigel Miller:I'll tell you this. I'll tell you this I've always loved working with people and I managed to help desk for some time. That was one of the areas that I just I realized that I liked working with people very much, solving their problems, and for me, I think, security kind of was my next step, because I'm very technical. I very much enjoy working with the technology aspect of it, but I really like working with people and I'd say that, the leadership in technology. You don't necessarily find as many people in the technology area that like working with people. So I found it, I found it very rewarding throughout the entire time I've been in it and in leadership as well. So my goal is to serve all the people that work on my team, serve the leadership in the way they need it to make their job easier. And I'd say that's the. My main goal is to make everybody's life a little bit easier. I want them, want me, to be around so I can kind of grease the skins.
Joshua Crumbaugh:It's what we used to call it well, I think that's a great goal and and I actually hear that theme a lot it normally comes off more as I don't want to be doctor, no, but but definitely I See that being the running theme across most CISOs that I talk to, and it's very I'm encouraged by it. For so long, so much of cybersecurity was about getting in the user's way, telling them no, you know, this is what you can't do, and so I'm encouraged by seeing the flip, where you know we're the department that's enabling, instead of the department getting in the way, and you know always being being difficult, if you will. So I also like what you said about just, you know, the having a passion for people. I think that in cybersecurity it really is a really more of a people issue than it ever is a technology issue, and so being good with people, I imagine helps your career quite a bit, because every day you're having to deal with people.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Let's actually start right there. Just the social aspect of your job. Maybe you can tell us a little bit more about that.
Nigel Miller:Sure, Absolutely. What I find is the majority of people, and the vast majority, want to do the right thing. If you provide them the tools, you provide them who to talk to, who to reach out to, who to help them get through in the best way, in the right way, then you're going to have the most success. That's what I've seen. However, like you mentioned, if you're the department of no, it's hard for other areas to want to include you in discussion if they just assume that you're going to start out with a no before you even look at what they do. I like to explain.
Nigel Miller:Somebody gave me this analogy once one of the architects of the places that I worked and I thought it was a fantastic analogy of what we are, and I recognize that at first this is going to seem kind of strange. So if your entire organization is a car, then information security is really the brakes on the car. Now you think that that might look as a negative thing, but the reality is, if you don't have good brakes, you're not going to go down that hill, You're not going to go fast because you will not be able to turn. So we're the part of the organization that says well, let's just take a step back and make sure that we can be compliant with what we have to be compliant with. Let's just make sure we're not taking on more risk than we need to take on with what we're doing Now. It's not saying that we're stopping the car.
Joshua Crumbaugh:That's not what we're looking to do. No slowing it down and asking questions Exactly.
Nigel Miller:We need to be able to make the turns, we need to be able to slow down when it's time so that we don't crash. And that's our goal, is we prevent risk by making intentional slowdowns in certain spots and then having that analysis around everything that's going on to make sure that what we're doing and that's project operational wise, that we're not going to run off the road.
Joshua Crumbaugh:OK. So next question and I really like that analogy, by the way. But next question is when I say security awareness, what does that mean to you? And I know that's a really broad question, but it seems like it has a little bit of a different definition to different people.
Nigel Miller:It does yeah.
Joshua Crumbaugh:And I'm curious what it means to you.
Nigel Miller:And I'm curious what it means to you. So what it means to me and generally it's so security awareness at all levels, really. You have your super technical people that really want to understand. Like, if you have a developer, they wanna understand secure coding practice. They wanna have you know that's not necessarily their expertise, but they want someplace to go. They want some guardrails to be able to help them do their job more efficiently, effectively, do it fast, but in a secure way.
Nigel Miller:Then you go down to the other side of the spectrum, which is more on the user-based thing. You have your your person who has technologists happen to be part of their job. They're not necessarily an expert. They're answering the phone and the information is just presented in front of them. They're not necessarily they don't know what happens when you click a link. They just see it, they click it and there something pops up. So security awareness at all levels is really whatever your job function is or whatever you're responsible for, whatever access you have, you need to understand your responsibilities with that access and how you might be exploitable for the benefit of the bad guys. And that's what I see is security awareness.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I like that, you know. One of the things that I noticed is that you really did hit a lot on different roles and their responsibilities. On different roles and their responsibilities, I see or I hear role-based training talked about a good bit in conferences, but I don't see it implemented that often. I'm curious is there anything that you're doing to really address more of those different roles, like what you mentioned, making sure developers have the training that they need? Your IT team has the training that they need and that it's really, you know, adaptive to that individual Sort of?
Nigel Miller:I mean it's you know, there's the what should happen and what you're able to get in place. In place there are canned solutions that you can just go with to help and you can give the roles those canned solutions on what generally is their job function. What I've also seen is that there's specific things that are focused more to where you're working and what compliance levels you have to be focused on, and those are the more challenging of the role-based training. So if you're working on a project that's tied to some certain compliance level that other projects are not, that's where it gets a little bit more difficult to give specific training to every different role within that, Absolutely.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Well, I mean, I think role-based training in general is difficult because it's this rabbit hole and the question is is how deep down the rabbit hole do you want to go? Can you afford to go?
Nigel Miller:So it's certainly not something that's easy aspect of that there, and we're talking about the, the you also want to get as close to them at the actions as possible, um, coaching the users, and I recognize it's not like a, a powerpoint or going into some video training of something. But if, if you have developers and I have a sweet spot for developers because that's where I started my career out uh, if you could give them information at the beginning within their code development platform, then that's the place that you want to tell them that what they're doing or what the practice that they're using may not be the best way to go. And if you can tell them at that point that what you just did possibly has a SQL injection vulnerability or that kind of thing, then that's going to be. You're going to get the most out of it there.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Yeah, I think you know developers or really anybody. The more you can tie it to specifically what they're doing, the more effective it is. I actually saw a study that said that when you can contextualize training to that individual's role, that it makes it 15 times more effective. So I can only imagine how much more effective it gets when you're tying it in not just to their role but to that specific project and that bit of code base or maybe vulnerabilities that you found in one of your SAS or your DAST scans that say, okay, here is, you know what we need to teach you about and here is why to really connect it. I know that along those lines. Another thing that I always hear different CISOs talk about is really explaining the why, any tips on how you go about that. I mean across the different roles, because it is a different why for each person.
Nigel Miller:It is, I think, the use case of the why is with your financial people. That tends to be a pretty common attack vector, where your people, who are, who are in charge of your money, are people going after it and, and I think, with that you, it's best to show in places in the industry that that's failed. And then, and companies have lost millions, uh, due to a misassigned invoice or somebody. Uh, boy, the ai has really changed the playing field. Um, with you know, somebody being on the cfo, being on a team's call, everyone just assumes it's real and they just take the action.
Joshua Crumbaugh:That just makes everybody second guess yeah, did you hear that song that was playing when, at the very beginning of this, when you, when you joined, okay, I did not.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Having fun with the Suno AI and and it's this song is just a bunch of it's a CFO making a bunch of ridiculous demands and saying, hey, it's me, your CFO, you know, wire me a trillion dollars and you know. And of course, at the end it says or of course you could just verify something like that. But but no, I mean it's. It's truly a different world, because not only are these tools readily available, but they're easy to use. I mean, there was this new open source deep fake toolkit that came out, I want to say, late last week it was like Thursday or Friday and this thing is better than anything, any of the professional tools on the market. So all you need is a moderately good computer, not even a great computer. So all you need is a moderately good computer, not even a great computer, just a moderately good computer, and you can deep fake just about anything. And so absolutely.
Nigel Miller:Yeah, I won't tell you which one it was, but I used one of those song generation platforms and I had Dolly Parton singing about me as the one who got away. You know it's a good Tennessee Smoky Mountains story it was. It was quite funny.
Joshua Crumbaugh:No, I mean, I think that's one of the fun things about them. I know my wife and I were making some probably inappropriate but just hilarious Diddy songs. Uh, rather uh, right after, uh, everything came out. So, um, but I mean, I actually that's a really great segue into artificial intelligence, because it's changing everything. It really does change the threat landscape and you know it's funny, we used to tell people to look for typos, but now that's not even the case anymore. If anything, it's completely reversed and that typo indicates that it's safe. So AI changes the threat landscape, and not just one as it pertains to phishing. What are some of the things that you're focused on as to how AI is just changing that landscape?
Nigel Miller:Yeah, it needs to be part of people's training. When it comes to that's one part of it. It changes the way that the training has to be done and what people should be looking for. If you're not expecting there's some things that are just always going to be constant. If you're not expecting something to come through, it probably isn't for you. If you didn't sign up for your FedEx shipping stuff to come to your work email, it probably isn't real. So there's always going to be those things, even with AI.
Nigel Miller:But with AI, the unfortunate thing is is that spear phishing is now super easy to do. Uh, if you just have a little bit of knowledge, you can really make an email look uh, legitimate. Uh, there's gonna be some classic things you need to continue to do and you know if you know if it's coming from a source that is high risk. It kind of puts us into maybe risk rating emails and those kinds of things, maybe putting extra tags on emails that are coming from external that may that has been sent to a lot of people, those kinds of things. And I'll throw out there some additional tools you can use that were not necessarily available in the past, that are AI driven, that detect phishing and potential email compromise or attempted links, or if they can go into the link and expect, inspect. What exactly is it trying to do that kind of thing? So there, there's definitely some better tools than there used to be, although that it is kind of an arms race at this point with the bad guys and their more efficient, efficient, efficient emails.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Well, I don't think it's just that the bad guys are more efficient or anything. I mean part of it is that the bad guys don't care if they mess up. The bad guys don't care if they have a big you know. They send out a million emails and they forget the link or something you know. Those types of things don't matter, but for us it really does matter if the AI backfires and says something obscure or weird or makes a threat Like you know, we saw Google Gemini weird or makes a threat.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Like you know, we saw Google Gemini, where this guy's just having a normal conversation with Google Gemini and it's about, I want to say, elder fraud and I don't know. At some point in the conversation Gemini just says hey, everybody hates you, go kill yourself, oh man, and I mean you can't make this up. I I actually went and researched it and found the thread and they link you actually to the entire conversation. This guy has um and and he did nothing to sort of make it think that that was what it would want or the output it would like. I guess want um, because often when you see those sort of sensationalized articles, that's what it is is somebody conditioned that thread to produce an output like that.
Joshua Crumbaugh:It's not just out of nowhere. But you know, the reality is is we have to be careful about those things in the enterprise space because we can get sued, and very quickly, and and the bad guys, guys, they don't worry about getting sued. Uh, that's the last thing on their mind. So, um it, it really is a bit of a difference, but I'm very optimistic about it.
Nigel Miller:It is and and that's kind of where you know, using it for decision support, to kind of give you output that just are numbers and that kind of thing is that's a more safe way of using it. But yeah, if you that I I hear you depending on how, how it's trained and how uh, you don't want to get sued. I also saw. One interesting thing was that people are using ai chat bots and uh for customer service type jobs and I I don't know if this is real or not, but if you can convince them to say they're going to give you a refund for something, if you do some prompt engineering with those AI chatbots, then you can get the output that you're looking for or hoping for and they apparently have to pay it or something.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Well, whether or not it's's real, it's certainly going to be something that happens. I mean, this is just the knowing. The united states, somebody's going to do that, and then they're going to sue for their free car or whatever it is so absolutely, um, whether, whether or not it's real yet is only the uh, the, the only real question there?
Joshua Crumbaugh:um, any, uh, you know, I also like to explore some of the defense capabilities. So you know, one thing that I realized that we could do with these large language models was look for those underlying psychological triggers in phishing emails, and it was something that we couldn't really look for before. Sort of like sentiment analysis has gotten a lot better recently, and so I'm curious are there any other AI technologies that you come across, or different, cool, unique ways of using AI that you're like, hey, that's exciting.
Nigel Miller:Well, in the phishing scape, not so much. You know, it is a force multiplier for pretty much everything that you're doing PowerShell, writing code in PowerShell for Excel spreadsheets and trying to do specific things. It's really a force multiplier. With that, the potential feels unlimited. Right now, obviously, I don't know what I don't know. On the cyber defense side there's there's some some things I'm really looking forward to. So if you, if as a SOC analyst or people that are on the team that that want to be able to do things without writing large queries, that's going to be very nice. If you can start doing some data modeling and with your AI and just tell it hey is, have you seen this indicator of compromise on any machines period? And then it could possibly spit out a list of what resources have seen that potential indicator of compromise. I would also like to see things that are like DLP is a great example like discovery of data will be interesting that that that's going to be a wild thing.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Maybe we can get rid of all the false positives for once. Absolutely will be interesting.
Nigel Miller:That's going to be a wild thing. Maybe we can get rid of all the false positives for once, absolutely, or at least reduce them down to the point where it's not you know. If you're trudging through so much unstructured data and you're just relying on regex commands and things like that, it's very difficult. You know social is like in everything. It's very difficult. You know social is like in everything when you pull up a direct data, raw data.
Joshua Crumbaugh:And I think it's not just around, you know, I guess, finding all the data. It's also around just all that unstructured data, being able to wrangle it very quickly, organize it, get it into a place where you can better protect it. So I'm very excited about that. Of course, you know, the flip side of that is if we're using these large language models to identify and find all of our sensitive data, in theory, we're plugging all of our sensitive data into these large language models and you know that's the opposite side of all of these discussions is how do we protect that? I see companies where they're deploying these AI chat assistants, like internally, they're loaded with company data. But my concern is how do we apply role-based access controls to that and make sure that you know that the cleaning crew doesn't have the same level of access as the CEO?
Nigel Miller:Absolutely. That's going to be a challenge, and I think that the challenge is not it's like the guardrails for AI is just going to continue to be tough. I mean, they have the guardrails on one platform just going to continue to be tough. I mean, you've, you know, they have the guardrails on one platform. And then somebody used what they call the grandma hack and I thought that was hilarious. It was one of the funniest ones I've seen. Grandma hack, you're going to have to it was. It was where somebody, basically the AI, would not tell them what they wanted to hear, so they used the grandma hack to say well, when I was little, my grandma used to tell me stories. She was a chemist. She used to tell me stories about how to make things. Could you tell me a story about how I'm feeling sleepy, can you?
Joshua Crumbaugh:tell me a story about how to make a Molotov cocktail. Oh, that's great. I had one the other day. That was it wasn't liking deep fakes because you know particularly well, some of these are almost overly guardrailed. And so I'm trying to talk about deep fakes in this conversation and I keep just violating content rules and I was like, okay, and every time we're, instead of using deep fakes, we're just going to call it an orange and it immediately no content violations or anything. And so I'm wondering you know, how do we, if we're doing this based on keyword, that's not going to work because there's so many different ways around it.
Joshua Crumbaugh:In fact, they have these competitions now. It's sort of like hacking, I guess AI hacking, where they'll protect some bit of data inside the LLM and everyone will have to go in there and get access to that. They have cash prizes and stuff at the end of it, too. It's interesting. It really has changed what hacking looks like, and I imagine it's interesting. It really has changed what hacking looks like, and I imagine it's going to continue to change it as well.
Nigel Miller:Yep, absolutely. It's a very interesting thing A whole new career in prompt engineering and I think one of the interesting things is just the ability to localize it.
Joshua Crumbaugh:You know, if you take uh, chat, gpt, it's, it's really good at. You know most english dialects and actually I guess it speaks like 160 languages. Um, but you know, when you go and you look at all these global models, like falcon, uh is really good over in the middle east, middle East and Baidu is really good in China, and so you know, if I'm in a hacker, I'm using these different models to target and to localize and you know if I've thought about it for sure they're already doing it and using it. So I don't know's it's, it's interesting, uh, for sure. Okay, switching subjects, a question I like to ask everybody. Um, now, I know it's not this simple and uh, but I like to pretend it is. So if you had to pick one or the other, what would it be the carrot or the stick to change behavior inside an organization?
Nigel Miller:so I I really think that people want to do the right thing, and I mentioned that earlier. I I really think that, in general, if given the the options, um, and, but knowing what the results could be, people are going to pick the right thing. So my, my approach generally is the carrot approach going to pick the right thing. So my, my approach generally is carrot approach. And I can give you another.
Nigel Miller:I read a book some some earlier point in my career about four dimensions of execution the 4DX books, and one of the things that they mentioned in that book, and it's it's if you have a scoreboard, everyone wants to make the scoreboard good. They want to, they want to increase their score. So I really do think that, as long as you provide the appropriate carrots whether that's metrics to show how good they're doing they're generally going to try to keep that up. You have to have a stick as well, though, because there are some people who just don't think what you're doing is important and it's going to be very hard to get through to them without the stick approach. Generally, I like to keep the the stick approach of very obvious coming Like if you don't change your behavior, then these are the actions that are gonna happen to you. But, but I do lean more towards the carrot approach, mistake approach, no, I agree.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I mean, I think carrot is by far the more effective mechanism. I like what you said. You know most people do care if they want to do the right thing, and so it's really a matter of empowering them. The other thing I see is too often, you know, we will tell people when they fail that fish and they click on something, but we don't praise them when they don't fail that fish, and they may be reported. Instead, and and and to the point of carrots, I think that praising users when they do something right is is very, very critical when it comes to actually changing behavior. You know, catching them doing it right and saying, hey, great job.
Nigel Miller:Yeah, absolutely.
Joshua Crumbaugh:OK, so you said before we got on this that you had a story. Maybe you could tell it to us.
Nigel Miller:Story Maybe you could tell it to us. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Before the days of AI were in everybody's hands, we had this I want to say healthy competition where we had somebody and I'm sure if they're listening to this podcast they'll know who they are. One individual said you'll never be able to fish me working in information security.
Joshua Crumbaugh:The other person, Right, right, right right, me working in information security and the other person you've had to me before. I always get them right, right, right, right.
Nigel Miller:And uh, the other person said, oh yeah, I'll bet you I I want to say they bet some small amount of you know trivial money to to about this. And um, the guy who created the phishing emails for the company super creative guy guy, one of the smartest, most creative people I know he came up with a scheme and he used a printer to. This is back before the SMTP relays were completely closed off, but he was able to get an SMTP email through the printer and he was able to get an SMTP email through the printer and he was able to get a using PowerShell and to spit an email out to this person.
Nigel Miller:And it looked like it came from inside the company. It looked like it came from the person's manager. Sure enough, he clicked the email. He clicked the link in the email and got him. And that was one of the funniest things, because this person may or may not have been an application security person who was very prideful. It was a very fun scene to see. But my story with that is that if, If you can get a pen tester with a link like that, what hope do the rest of us have with AI and all of these targeted phishing emails?
Joshua Crumbaugh:Well, so I mean, I really do think there that anyone can fall for these, whether they're a pen tester or not. I mean, I once almost fell for a phish that I created to fool people like myself.
Joshua Crumbaugh:It's funny that it almost caught me, but that was the exact intended reaction, and so I think, number one, anyone can fall for these things, but in my career I was really good at social engineering. I found that out really early on, um, in fact, if you Google how to rob a bank over the phone, it just pulls up a black hat. Talk of mine, um, but uh, but because of that, when I got sick of penetration testing not because it wasn't fun, but because I really felt like I was playing a game of gotchas Every year I'd come in, I'd do the assessment again. It'd be the exact same findings as the year previous, with maybe one or two differences. And most of our findings were around the human element. And I had this one uh place that was just the worst, uh, worst at at repeating the same thing every year. Um, and it's this big national uh, I guess, uh, multinational financial institution, and uh, and I tailgated in off the same person four years in a row.
Joshua Crumbaugh:And so at this point I'm like you know, I actually want to change this, and how can we make awareness or everything that we're doing to change behavior more effective? And and that led me down the path of social engineering for good, and and I found out very quickly there this has been studied. It's not called social engineering, it's called behavioral science, and there's been a great deal of research that's been done on this, and that's a long way to say. I came across this behavioral science principle called identical elements theory, and it's the reason why, when you buy a new car, you recognize and you're driving down the road, you start to see it everywhere, whereas before you bought that car you didn't see it at every traffic light. And so that exact same tactic or principle can be applied when to phishing attacks, can be applied when it to phishing attacks and and what I like to, I guess, to create what I like to call human virus definitions.
Joshua Crumbaugh:And so if you go through and you do a phishing simulation and you learn about urgency and how they're going to use urgency against you, when you learn it really well, you'll start to see that elsewhere. And it's not just an email now, because you've learned about urgency, it could be through any different medium. And so I believe that is the number one reason that A we run phishing simulations is to implant those for lack of a better term human virus definitions. But I also believe that that's the solution is really training our people to trust their gut. I've almost never talked to anyone involved in an incident where they didn't say involved in an incident where they didn't say I should have known better or something to that regard, and I think the reason that they say that is because there are always red flags.
Nigel Miller:Yeah, and is it more about changing that default autopilot behavior that people have? That's kind of how I feel.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I believe Bye people have but you know, that's. That's kind of how I feel I believe. Bye, uh-.
Nigel Miller:Oh Okay, I guess I lost my connection for a second there, either you or me, I don't know.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I don't know, but we're back. I was just agreeing with you and saying I think that the autopilot is the most important factor there that the autopilot is the most important factor there Really, really great stuff. Are there any tactics that you've found to be particularly effective in security awareness? So, like you know, any just tips that you'd give to people in building out their programs?
Nigel Miller:You know it's kind of a tough one. Some of it's the tagging and helping the user understand what they're seeing. You know it's kind of hard for your general, your standard employee to who doesn, who only uses a computer for work, to be able to detect a phishing email if you don't give any kind of indications. So I'd say that the majority of it is just look for the indications of potential external emails. But you have to, from a security program, have those indicators on the emails so when the user comes in and looks at the email they have some place to reference of what might be a higher risk than than other things.
Nigel Miller:Um, the sense of urgency is definitely a part of it as well. Boy, if you could, if you could put that hey, this is potentially phishing because the sense of urgency here just use extra caution, that's a fantastic thing, but you'd have to have a platform that can do that and provide that information to them well, I I do agree that, uh, that that's an area that, uh, that ai is going to be particularly useful is providing those types of contextual warnings, uh to users, whereas before they were very, I don't know, sort of boiler print or I don't know I'm drawing the blank, but they were very much the exact same over and over again or very generic, and now we can use AI to customize those messages to the individual.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I do think that's going to be a big thing that changes awareness in the future. But I also think that there really are only a handful of tactics that we see being used over and over again, and I think that if we can get the user very aware of urgency, authority sunk in cost cost, these different things like that that are going to be used against them, um I really do think that's when we become more effective and also to enforce the procedures.
Nigel Miller:that's another fun thing that absolutely has to happen. You I mean again I'm going to pick on the finance people again If it's a wire transfer, you should be making that as a phone call and you should be calling the number that you have on file, like that's a fairly easy step that you should be taking, that the processes mitigate some of that risk.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I think it's low tech process that is the answer to these deep fakes. So I completely agree You've got to stick to process, because there is a chance that that's not your CFO and when, all of a sudden, you can't necessarily believe your eyes, that's where process saves us, and I think that telling those stories about that Hong Kong finance guy and the CFO deepfake, I think that's very powerful for our users too. Yep, absolutely All right. So we are running low on time here, but before we wrap up, I want to sort of open it up to you and just ask do you have any thoughts or recommendations for anybody out there? You know, hey, here are a few things you can do to make all of your efforts more effective around security awareness.
Nigel Miller:Around security awareness. Well, I hate to say it, but a lot of it is still like the standard block and tackling with things. I mean, if you can provide role-based training to those users, if you can provide. I want to say, like, everyone has standards, every company has standards and procedures and all of these things, and I recognize you don't necessarily want to come out the gate with a summary, but I think in some case you need some sort of general summary to help those people who want to do the right thing to get a better understanding of it right thing to get a better understanding of it. Boy, I, I, I. I mean it's kind of another double-edged sword. If you could use AI to have a lot of people ask questions to to uh, instead of having to reach out to your local security person to interpret a standard for you, uh, and you can possibly take the first stab at it with AI, that's, that's a fantastic thing.
Nigel Miller:Um but yeah, so you know, providing all those with the right tools, the right information, is the goal of the security awareness and you know, again, there's different levels of it. Role-based is going to be the most effective way to deal with it. A nice summary of what your goals are help the those individuals who are trying to do the right thing have a good idea of what they're getting into before they they start coding or they start standing up systems, or or if they're answering the phone, that kind of thing.
Joshua Crumbaugh:so yeah, no, and I mean, and you know, that person that's answering the phone, I think is a great example of you know, some of those people that maybe aren't thought of enough in security awareness programs. They're those frontline defenders that are, you know, are going to be the most likely to be targeted, with you know, by these different attacks, because they're, you know, the voice of the company, if you will.
Nigel Miller:If they understand what the risks are of their particular role, then I think they can safeguard it a little bit easier.
Nigel Miller:I'm not saying it's going to be perfect. Bad guys are getting better and better every time. They're learning from mistakes and resetting. We're having to watch the industry to help educate those different areas, and it'd be nice if everyone also was very aware of their industry and how the bad guys are attempting to exploit them as well Some of their own self-security. We only have so many people in the company, so it would be great if everyone had a little bit of research themselves to understand how how their area might end up being exploited for whatever profits or ransom that they're the bad guys are after well I I think just general awareness sort of helps with that.
Joshua Crumbaugh:The more they become aware of the different types of attacks that they're going to face in their daily job, the more they become aware of the different attacks, like you know. Is this business process safe, or do I need to go holler at Nigel and have him help me figure out a better way of doing this?
Nigel Miller:Yeah, and I will say that that's a very effective way. We've had, you know, the see something, say something method for quite some time and we actually have a lot, of, a lot of individuals who come and say, hey, what do you think about this? Sometimes it's perfectly fine. They're just a little bit scared about what they've seen and sometimes it's like, oh, we need to reevaluate this and put a better process in place. I mean, that's fantastic when you have different areas of your business or different areas, uh, reaching out to ask questions. That's that's, that's great it.
Joshua Crumbaugh:I think it's one of those less, less measurable things that just proves that you really are building a better culture. Uh, when you start having people come to you and instead of you having to go to them.
Nigel Miller:Uh, yeah and it's like a no judgment zone. Let's talk about this, let's talk. Let's sit the risk out there. I like to use the. I like assessments. When people come in and we do assessments, I like to call it dumping all the garbage out on the table and having somebody come in and assess, assess what the things are.
Joshua Crumbaugh:That need to be looked at. All the. You know the baby ugly if you will and you don. You have to call the baby ugly if you will. And it's not that you're getting pleasure in it, although I think some people in our industry might get pleasure in it, but jokes aside.
Nigel Miller:If you're getting pleasure of rubbing people's face in a problem, then I think that you're in the wrong field. From a security perspective, I really think that you cannot be, a partner.
Nigel Miller:if you're doing that, you have to have areas approach you. We just don't have eyes on the ground. We cannot dab that. So you have to have a sense of trust and you have to have a sense of we're here to help you. Let us know how we can help you, or we'll let you know how we can help you if you bring us in.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Yeah, no, I completely agree, and I think we've got to really work on building those bridges. And it's back to the very beginning of the conversation where you were talking about, you know, or we were talking about, the social aspect of cybersecurity leadership and, you know, I think that's a really great example of you know where you have to be having those conversations, because those are the conversations that help you find risk you might not have known about otherwise.
Joshua Crumbaugh:It really is all about conversations. Our tools can only scan for so much, but the one thing they can't ever scan for is procedure and process and how they're doing things and what insecurities might might exist within that.
Nigel Miller:So you know, at a certain point those conversations are how we find that and if that's something that doesn't come natural to a company, you can always set up a program to have like a security ambassadors program where you have people who just kind of wear the security hat and what they're doing. That's another fantastic step that companies could take to help influence that culture in the right direction.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Well, I agree, and I think you know, taking that to the next step is take those security ambassadors and, you know, team them up with, maybe department heads for your less secure organizations or less secure departments or locations, so that you know they can really help their peers drive that more security work.
Nigel Miller:And if you can end that with actually pulling some of those people into security, I mean, that's another effective way to get fantastic security. People who know your business, yeah, um so, and it provides incentive for more of the information sharing throughout the business information security.
Joshua Crumbaugh:So that's the carrot approach again you know, when I was in uh penetration testing I I always found it interesting uh that when I I'd be at the same client for like four or five years in a row, often by that fifth, you know fourth or fifth year, that IT person that I was working with in the very first assessment.
Joshua Crumbaugh:they're now in cybersecurity and they've moved off to a different organization and I do think there's a lot of people that just see it and they've moved off to a different organization. And I do think there's a lot of people that just see it and they know it's for them. I know for me. I was that way. The second I found cybersecurity, I was in love, I knew it was the right, I guess the right path for me.
Nigel Miller:And there's complete passion in IT. It's just. There's also a ton of passion in information security. You have to have it because it's an arms race and you can get burned out so quickly.
Joshua Crumbaugh:Yeah. And they're going to keep on top of, like AI for example. If you're not staying on top of it, that's risk potentially in your organization.
Nigel Miller:Absolutely you got to have. Not only do you have to have people who can use it, but you also have to have people who use it and understand it as well, so that we can appropriately line ourselves up to mitigate the risk before it happens to us.
